Pawsitively Hiking Fun

Don’t let the end of summer get you down. Fall is the perfect hiking season. Here are a few things to remember to ensure your doodle stays safe and healthy.

  • Do not allow your dog off leash unless you know he/she will ignore every temptation and come to you when called. Watch their body language for signs that they hear a new sound. A good training tool is a coach-style whistle to call your dog. It can be heard easier than your voice when competing with wind and rustling leaves.

  • Be realistic about your dog’s fitness level and plan age-appropriate hikes. Older dogs and puppies will tire faster and shouldn’t be pushed past their limit.

  • Pack food/snacks and water for your dog. Offer water from the portable bowls at home so your dog is familiar with them when you’re away from home.

  • Don’t allow your dog to drink from streams or ponds … think lepto and giardia. If they do, check with your vet to know what symptoms to watch for.

  • Make sure your dog is current with all shots, especially rabies. Additionally, protection from fleas, ticks, and heartworms is recommended. Don’t forget to check your dog periodically for fleas and ticks.

  • . Always bring a towel; you never know what those silly Doodles will get into.

  • Make sure your first aid kit has enough supplies for your dog.

  • I read that you should clean up after your dog, and I agree if he “goes” on the trail … but doesn’t a bear “go” in the woods?

Healthy Doodle Snacks

  • Whole carrots are boiled in beef broth until tender, then frozen.

  • Honeydew Melon

  • Cantelope

  • Watermelon – very hydrating on hot days

  • Dehydrated fruit – Winston LOVES mango and bananas.

  • Marrow Bones are a great natural tooth cleaner; ask the butcher or look in the frozen food section.

  • Wilderness Wild Bones – another great tooth cleaner

  • Himalayan Yak cheese chews – great for teeth and gums

Not all my dogs like the fruit; Jack lets it drop on the floor, and Winston gobbles it. They unanimously prefer the hard chews. We only offer grain-free, natural ingredient treats due to Winston’s allergies.
